A pivotal congressional primary is set to test former President Donald Trump’s political influence. The race unfolds Thursday night in Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District, featuring Trump-supported Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., against Charlie Hatcher. Hatcher, who received an endorsement from Governor Bill Lee, was formerly the state’s agriculture commissioner.
Key Players
Ogles, a prominent Trump ally, seeks a third term for the Middle Tennessee district, which encompasses parts of the Nashville suburbs. Hatcher has previously served under both Democrat and Republican administrations as Tennessee State Veterinarian and Agriculture Commissioner.
“I’m not really surprised at all. You know, they’re friends,” Ogles commented on Lee endorsing Hatcher.
Ogles argued that his endorsements, including those from Trump and House GOP leaders, underscore his conservative credentials.
Endorsements and Influence
Ogles emphasized the importance of Trump’s endorsement, noting that Trump has supported conservatives like him in various races. Ogles also cited endorsements from House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Judiciary Committee Chair Jim Jordan, highlighting their conservative alignment.
“The golden endorsement that anyone wants is that of President Trump’s, which I have,” Ogles stated.
Political Landscape
Trump’s endorsement is significant in deep-red Tennessee, where he won decisively in 2024, defeating Vice President Kamala Harris by 18 points in the district. Despite the advantage, Ogles faces challenges from a super PAC, the Invest in Tomorrow Coalition, which spent over $1 million against him and in support of Hatcher. Billionaire Chris Larsen, a major donor, previously supported Harris.
Ogles is a member of the ultra-conservative House Freedom Caucus, but he has acted as a key liaison between Johnson and his right flank on several bills. This role has solidified his standing with Johnson.
“We have to keep and maintain and grow the Republican majority in the House, and Andy Ogles is a key part of this majority,” said Johnson in support of Ogles.
Candidate Positions
Lee released a video embracing his long-term friendship with Hatcher and recognizing his conservative values. Hatcher thanked Lee for his endorsement and pledged to support conservative values and Trump’s agenda. He also committed to finding solutions to serve Tennessee families.
Previously, Trump and Lee have clashed over Republican primary races, notably disagreeing in the 2024 race where Trump-backed Bobby Harshbarger triumphed over Lee’s choice for a state Senate seat.
