Versatile Ben Finney Leads Kouts Mustangs in State Championship Pursuit

2 weeks ago 0

Ben Finney, a sophomore at Kouts, excels on the baseball field. While he typically occupies center field in travel ball, Jesse Overholt, a senior, holds that position for the Mustangs. According to Kouts coach Jason Dorshorst, Finney ranks among the top shortstops in his state class. However, the team already boasts talent in that area, with Billy Miller and Landon Garrett filling the shortstop role.

Finney has shown his capability as a pitcher, though the team already has ample pitching options. As a result, he spent two seasons at second base before being moved to right field for the playoffs. Dorshorst mentioned Finney’s adaptability, sharing that when Finney was informed of his new position, he said, “I don’t think I brought my outfielder’s glove today, but I’ll figure it out.” This adaptability and enthusiasm have been evident in Finney’s performance in right field.

Beyond his fielding prowess, Finney is the leadoff hitter for the Mustangs, who have an impressive 31-1 record. This top-ranked team will face No. 4 Northeast Dubois, with a 23-5 record, in their second consecutive Class 1A state championship game at Victory Field in Indianapolis. Finney’s batting average stands at .366 with two home runs, eight triples, 23 RBIs, 51 runs, and 20 stolen bases.

Recently, Finney went 3-for-3 with an inside-the-park home run, two triples, four RBIs, and three runs scored during a decisive 13-1 victory over Fort Wayne Blackhawk Christian in the semi-state final. Reflecting on the game, Finney said, “I started off slow. I was kind of in a slump in the hitting zone. But recently I’ve kind of found myself. My swing’s coming back to me, and I feel good now.” His freshman stats showcased his talent with a .412 batting average, 29 RBIs, 46 runs scored, and 23 stolen bases.

Senior first baseman Eli Harper praised Finney, highlighting his work ethic and energy. Harper describes Finney as essential to the team, always bringing a positive attitude. His dedication makes him a natural leader for the upcoming senior year.

The Mustangs have enjoyed a 31-game winning streak since their initial loss to Guerin, a team now competing for the Class 3A state title. The Mustangs also secured their first outright Porter County Conference round-robin title since 2004 and their first PCC Tournament title since 1998.

Coach Dorshorst commented on the team’s growth compared to last season. Having previously lost to Indianapolis Lutheran, the Mustangs have approached this season with determination and focus. Dorshorst emphasized the team’s readiness, noting, “We have a job to do.”

Looking ahead to their matchup against Northeast Dubois, Finney remains confident. He believes the team’s experience from the previous year will serve them well. “It feels good to be back,” said Finney. “We’re confident. We know what to expect this time.”
