The Society of St. Pius X (SSPX), a group of traditionalist Catholics, has openly defied Pope Leo XIV, causing a significant schism within the Catholic Church. The SSPX defended their actions, asserting that they were focused on saving souls and claimed they faced an unjust sanction from the Vatican.
A letter from the SSPX’s leader, Rev. Davide Pagliarani, was sent to Pope Leo following the Vatican’s decision to excommunicate the group’s bishops and priests. The church warned SSPX followers that they also risked excommunication for their involvement in the schism.
The SSPX is known for its adherence to the Latin Mass and its opposition to modern Church reforms. This tension reached a new peak when four new bishops were consecrated without papal consent during a large ceremony at the SSPX seminary in Econe, Switzerland, which is seen as a grave violation of church law.
Pope Leo had urged the SSPX to avoid this act, but the group proceeded regardless. The harsh Vatican response surprised even critics of the SSPX. Pagliarani described the SSPX as staunch defenders of church tradition, unjustly sanctioned by Rome. He stated that despite these sanctions, the SSPX remains devoted to the church and hopes their actions benefit the wider Catholic community and the Pope.
Founded in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the SSPX opposes the reforms of the Second Vatican Council that aimed to improve relations with other religions and allowed mass in local languages instead of Latin. Though regarded as a fringe group, the SSPX has been a constant challenge for the Vatican, claiming greater adherence to Catholicism than the Holy See.
The Vatican’s severe reaction indicated it had grown weary of negotiation after three popes had attempted to address the issue. According to Rev. Robert Gahl from The Catholic University of America, the Vatican’s quick and decisive action underscored that the SSPX’s followers were participating in a schism, as the group claimed superior sacramental care compared to the broader church. Gahl noted the Vatican’s move stressed that true salvation as offered by the church required adherence to church authority, which the SSPX violated by disobeying the Pope.
