Tensions Escalate in Strait of Hormuz Amid U.S.-Iran Dispute

3 minutes ago 0

U.S. Position and Recent Developments

President Donald Trump announced no current U.S. talks with Iran, yet affirmed the Strait of Hormuz is “open and operating” despite reported strikes and restricted traffic in the area. Earlier, Trump threatened military action against Oman, which is negotiating with Iran to manage the strait’s shipping lanes, according to sources.

Iran’s Response and Ongoing Negotiations

Iran insists the waterway remains closed until its conditions are met. Meanwhile, talks between Iran and Oman are ongoing. Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed drone attacks on a Saudi oil refinery, intensifying regional tensions.

Trump’s Influence on Negotiations

Trump shared a map on social media, designating the strait as U.S. territory, sparking a response from Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, challenging Trump’s statements about the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz.

“Just as Trump correctly wrote the name of the eternal Persian Gulf, soon his delusion regarding the Strait of Hormuz will either be corrected or we will correct the delusions of this deluded man.”

The Trump administration expressed reservations over joint Iranian and Omani management proposals and voluntary fees for security and environmental protection.

Egypt’s Perspective

The Egyptian government suggested that the Iran-Oman agreement might resume broader Iran-U.S. negotiations to enhance regional security. This view followed discussions between Egyptian and Omani foreign ministers. The ongoing U.S.-Iran negotiations have not resolved the conflict.

Shipping Activity in the Strait

Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz dropped 19.5% last week, totaling 95 transits, with only three vessels passing on a recent Sunday. All used the Iranian-designated route, avoiding the Omani paths. In contrast, transit through the Bab el-Mandeb Strait increased.

Projectile Incident

In an incident involving an unidentified projectile near Oman, a ship’s engine room sustained damage, resulting in a casualty, according to the UK Maritime Trade Operations center. Details on the ship and its cargo are unclear, but no environmental harm was reported. The Omani Coast Guard is involved in the investigation.

Houthis’ Attack on Saudi Facilities

The Iran-backed Houthi rebels claimed responsibility for a drone attack on a Saudi Aramco refinery in Saudi Arabia. This move highlights the ongoing threat to Saudi infrastructure and could escalate Yemen’s civil conflict, impacting regional dynamics.
