Israel and Ireland faced each other in a highly contested Nations League match held in Hungary on Sunday. The match drew significant attention due to political tensions, with calls from Irish fans to boycott the game arising from Israel’s military actions in Gaza. These actions came in the wake of Hamas attacks on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of nearly 1,200 people.
In June, Ireland’s soccer federation announced that its home game against Israel would be moved to a neutral location, with no fans allowed. This decision followed Ireland’s initial attempt to have Israel banned from participating in international and club competitions. Despite these efforts, Israel participated in the match in Debrecen.
Ireland’s players made their protest known during the event. They wore black armbands and turned their gaze downward while the Israeli national anthem played. Ireland’s captain, Dara O’Shea, refrained from shaking hands with Israeli players, although he engaged with match officials.
Goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu opted not to participate, citing his belief against the killing of innocents. He clarified that his stance was not against the Israeli people or the Jewish community but was a statement against violence in the region.
Ireland has consistently criticized Israel’s actions in Gaza. Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin, in an interview, condemned antisemitism yet described Israel’s military response as disproportionate.
After extensive discussions, the Irish team decided to play the match, as stated by Football Association of Ireland CEO David Courell. Israel will continue to have its Nations League matches in Debrecen. The Israeli Football Association highlighted the importance of keeping politics separate from sports.
The match concluded with Ireland winning 3-0.
