A man in Texas has faced arrest and charges of capital murder tied to the shooting of a 5-year-old girl. The incident occurred over the weekend, according to authorities.

Jeremy Porter, 47, is now held in the Harris County Jail in Houston. Investigators linked him to the deadly shooting of Zah’Layah Walter, based on a statement from Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez.

Authorities quickly identified Porter with the help of evidence like automated license plate reader data. He was captured less than a day after the incident.

The tragic event unfolded Saturday night in northwest Harris County. Zah’Layah and her mother, Monica Hicks, along with her four siblings, were riding in a vehicle. Someone shot at them, resulting in the young girl’s death.

Hicks recounted to KHOU what happened as they traveled home from her mother’s house: “All my kids in the back seat were screaming, and they continued to shoot in my car. And I did not know my daughter was hit until I pulled into my apartment,” Hicks said.

The investigation by the Harris County Sheriff’s Office continues. They affirmed their resolve “to seek justice for [Zah’Layah] and support her family.”

The Sheriff’s Office shared a message on social media standing with Zah’Layah’s family and confirming the suspect’s arrest. They reiterated their commitment to justice and family support.
