Democratic Texas Senate candidate James Talarico chose to host campaign events in North Texas on Monday night, diverging from a rally in El Paso led by Sen. Bernie Sanders. This decision comes in the final weeks of his race against Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton.
Sen. Sanders was joined by former Rep. Beto O’Rourke and Democratic Reps. Greg Casar and Veronica Escobar at the Abraham Chavez Theatre. They aimed to boost voter support for Talarico as early voting commenced for the Nov. 3 midterm elections.
While Sanders and others criticized Republican campaign spending and advocated for Talarico, the candidate himself rallied at North Crowley High School in Fort Worth. This was part of his “Clear Eyes, Full Hearts” campaign tour, following another event in Denton.
Sanders held his “Fighting Oligarchy Tour” in El Paso, emphasizing the influence wealthy donors have on American elections. Talarico, despite not joining Sanders, echoed similar sentiments of concern about money’s role in politics, particularly targeting Paxton and billionaire Elon Musk.
Talarico claimed there is an affordability and corruption crisis in politics, urging supporters to focus beyond party lines. He stated, “This election shouldn’t be about the Democratic Party or the Republican Party. It’s bigger than that.” His remarks were part of a broader narrative aiming to transcend traditional political divisions.
The Senate seat is open following the retirement of Republican Sen. John Cornyn. Both Talarico and Paxton are vying for this critical position, which has attracted national interest as Democrats aim for their first Senate win in Texas since 1988.
