A teenage boy from Texas is recovering after a shark attacked him while he was boating with his father on Memorial Day weekend. The incident took place around 3:15 p.m. on Monday, off the coast of Galveston Island.
According to the Galveston County Sheriff’s Office, the U.S. Coast Guard received reports that a 17-year-old had been bitten by a shark. The attack occurred about two hours offshore as the boy attempted to pull the shark onto their boat.
The boy’s father acted quickly, applying a tourniquet to his son’s wound. They attempted to navigate back to the Galveston Yacht Basin when the boat became disabled near the jetties in the Gulf.
The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the emergency. Rescue crews applied a second tourniquet to reduce the bleeding and transported the teen back to shore.
Upon returning to land, the victim remained conscious and was taken to the University of Texas Medical Branch for further medical care. Authorities have not disclosed the nature of the injuries or the shark species involved.
The cause of the boat’s malfunction remains unknown, and there are no details on how the shark was brought onto the vessel. Officials from the U.S. Coast Guard and Galveston County Sheriff’s Office have not commented further on the situation.
