The Changing Face of Air Travel

1 month ago 0

The summer travel season is here with its high ticket prices and frequent cancellations. It brings nostalgia for recent times when travel seemed less stressful. Memories of the ‘golden age’ of flying include lavish meals and ample seating space, but it is more practical to remember 2023.

In 2023, flying meant checking in a bag on a domestic flight for around $30. There was little awareness of air traffic controller retirements, and wearing casual clothing was more accepted. Arriving four hours early for a flight was seen as over-cautious then, but is now normal to ensure timely arrival at the gate.

Concerns have shifted from being seated next to a crying child to being next to a noisy pet. More passengers travel with animals now. It costs about $150, the price of a meal at LaGuardia, to bring a pet onboard. On a Miami flight, comforting a fellow passenger’s dog was a reality. Reassuring the anxious pet in seat 21D brought the question of who deserves to panic more, especially when facing geopolitical risks and snacking nervously on overpriced airport snacks.

Previously, flying frustration felt shared, but times have changed with the rise of perks inequality. Some travelers enjoy exclusive lines, lounges, and private cabins, isolated from typical travel discomforts. Meanwhile, others endure basic economy seats, reflecting on their choices while watching those in luxury accommodations.
