Bending Spoons, an Italian company specializing in acquiring aging internet firms, is making headlines as it prepares to go public with a potential valuation of $19 billion. This transformation marks a significant milestone for the company, known for reviving iconic technology brands like AOL, Vimeo, Evernote, and others.

America Online, once a giant in the internet world, merged with Time Warner in 2001 in a deal worth $165 billion. Despite changes over the years, AOL remains an active entity, generating $633 million annually. Recently, Bending Spoons acquired AOL for $1.5 billion, setting the stage for a public offering alongside several other legacy internet brands.

Bending Spoons’ approach contrasts sharply with the hype surrounding artificial intelligence and tech startups. The A.I. surge has raised expectations within the industry, fueling multiple high-valued I.P.O.s. Notably, Elon Musk’s SpaceX achieved a record-breaking $1.77 trillion listing. Investors are now watching companies like Anthropic and OpenAI for similar market debuts.

Bending Spoons offers an alternative narrative through its acquisition strategy. By targeting technology brands with established recognition, the company reveals untapped value in these older names. Its approach involves reducing staff associated with the original internet services, increasing prices, and deploying its team of young engineers from Milan to enhance the products and stimulate growth.

Luca Ferrari, the chief executive of Bending Spoons, likened their strategy to a mix between a private equity firm and Google. The company aims to innovate and provide a fresh perspective on the potential of enduring internet brands.
