Three College Football Programs Ready for a Breakthrough

The coaching landscape in college football is ever-changing, with 33 programs appointing new head coaches during the last offseason. Financial investments, particularly through NIL endorsements, have led to decreased tolerance for poor performances. The success of Curt Cignetti, who led Indiana to a national championship in his second year, has intensified the pressure on coaches to deliver early results.

As these programs anticipate improvement under new management, let’s examine three that appear ready for a significant turnaround.

Florida: Jon Sumrall

Jon Sumrall has reenergized the Florida Gators, with significant enthusiasm and promising recruits joining the team. At previous posts with Troy and Tulane, he quickly achieved success. Notably, he guided Tulane to the College Football Playoff last season.

Florida dismissed Billy Napier after a disappointing 3-4 start, ending the 2025 season with a 4-8 record. Sumrall is expected to significantly increase Florida’s win total this fall. While a run at the College Football Playoff may need to wait until 2027, when the program can enhance its recruiting and transfer strategies, early improvements are anticipated.

LSU: Lane Kiffin

LSU tapped Lane Kiffin to restore stability after Brian Kelly’s tenure faltered in Baton Rouge. Kiffin brought Ole Miss to the College Football Playoff last year, leaving for LSU before coaching the Rebels in the playoff games. With substantial backing from LSU, Kiffin is tasked with assembling a competitive roster for the season.

Although claiming a national championship might be out of reach this year, LSU is positioned to contend for the SEC title and potentially a College Football Playoff spot.

Oklahoma State: Eric Morris

Oklahoma State is quietly poised for a rebound following a difficult 1-11 season in 2025. New head coach Eric Morris demonstrated capability by achieving an 11-2 record with North Texas last year. His squad narrowly missed advancing to the College Football Playoff, losing the American Conference championship to Tulane, led by Sumrall.

With the addition of dynamic quarterback Drew Mestemaker, who amassed 4,379 passing yards and 34 touchdowns at North Texas, Oklahoma State is geared for improvement. While competing for the Big 12 title might take time, the Cowboys are on track for a promising season.
