Three men might face charges following the tragic death of a 21-year-old woman, Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas, in Brazil. Authorities report that the woman was launched from a bridge without the necessary safety ropes intended to halt her fall.
Incident Details
Rodrigues de Freitas, a student, died during a rope-jumping activity on Saturday at a deserted bridge about 90 miles from São Paulo. Police investigator Andrea Levy informed that the instructors confessed to not attaching the safety equipment before her jump. “They do not remember whether they forgot to attach the ropes, or who should have done it, but the fact is, the ropes were not attached,” Levy noted.
The Ponte do Esqueleto, known as “Skeleton Bridge,” is located in São Paulo.
Investigation and Legal Proceedings
The instructors were arrested under suspicion of “homicide with eventual intent,” a Brazilian legal term used when a person is aware that their actions can result in death. They were charged on-site after the tragedy.
Witnesses indicated Rodrigues de Freitas opted for an “airplane style” jump, where two instructors lifted her before she extended her arms. Footage online shows two men, wearing helmets and secured with harnesses, launching her before the fall of about 130 feet occurred.
Rope Jumping Explained
Rope jumping, unlike traditional bungee jumping, involves low-stretch climbing ropes that create a pendulum swing instead of an elastic bounce. Reports state Rodrigues de Freitas joined a guided excursion which included this thrilling jump.
Community and Legal Reactions
The City of Limeira acknowledged Rodrigues de Freitas as a resident of Jandira, issuing condolences to her family and friends. They pledged cooperation with authorities in the ongoing investigation.
Authorities are examining if the activity group was authorized for operations at the location, and they suspect a verification failure of the safety rope greatly contributed to the incident.
According to a report, attorneys for the instructors mentioned this was the first fatality in their years of experience with rope jumping. Investigations continue to determine accountability for the safety failures.
