On Wednesday, three individuals died, and nearly twenty first responders were quarantined following exposure to an unidentified substance at a home in New Mexico. The New Mexico State Police reported the incident, which occurred in Mountainair, New Mexico, around 11 a.m.
Police initially responded to a suspected overdose at the residence, where they found four people unresponsive. Three of these individuals were declared dead. The fourth occupant, along with affected first responders, were taken to the University of New Mexico Hospital for quarantine and evaluation due to symptoms like nausea and dizziness.
Mountainair Mayor Peter Nieto stated that out of the four EMTs from Mountainair EMS, three have been released, but EMS Chief Josh Lewis remains hospitalized for observation. Lewis was the first to enter the residence.
Albuquerque Fire Rescue’s hazmat teams are working to identify the substance. Investigators believe it spreads through contact but is not airborne. A secure perimeter has been set up to ensure public safety.
“At this time, we do not know the exact cause,” Mayor Nieto posted online, adding that current evidence points towards narcotics. The investigation continues as officials confirm details.
The Mountainair Public Works has stated that carbon monoxide or natural gas is not responsible for the incident. Updates on the story will be provided as the situation develops.
