For many thrift shoppers, coming across a vintage band T-shirt is a rare find, but for Jordan Lee, it’s become a specialty. Known as @jordanleecorman on TikTok, he shared with Newsweek that locating donated band merchandise is a notable talent of his.
In a TikTok video posted on August 18, Lee showcased a collection of band T-shirts he discovered, including garments featuring artists like Gwen Stefani and Interpol, as well as a John Cena WWE shirt. This raised the question among viewers: Who donated these items?
Instead of unearthing a single concert tee, Lee found multiple pieces of merchandise, prompting him to humorously ponder over who donated such a collection, joking about the possibility of someone’s mom making the donation.
Recognizing a Collection
For collectors and long-time thrifters, finding such a collection can feel like a jackpot. A set of shirts from the same band, tour, or era can hint at their origin as a singular collection.
When you’ve spent a lot of time in a particular community, in my case, music, you naturally develop a stronger instinct for recognizing things connected to it.
Lee, who has worked in the music industry since he was 17, mainly within the emo, post-hardcore, and alternative metal scenes, recognizes the bands, designs, eras, and merchandise from these genres instantly.
Identifying Patterns
Lee notices patterns that suggest a common origin, such as multiple shirts in the same size or from related genres and time periods. Even similar wear can suggest they belonged to one person, revealing the story behind the donation.
The Appeal of Band Tees
Band T-shirts have transitioned from concert souvenirs to a significant collectibles market. Rockabilia, a retailer licensed for band merchandise, notes the growth of vintage band shirts’ value, with some original tour shirts from the 1970s to 1990s fetching high prices. Limited-edition designs can also maintain their demand soon after selling out.
However, simply finding an old shirt doesn’t guarantee its value. Rockabilia identifies rarity, artist demand, tour significance, artwork, condition, and authenticity as factors influencing a T-shirt’s worth.
Lee evaluates these aspects when assessing a shirt, considering the tag, stitching, tour year, and the blank used. Certain blanks provide clues about the production date.
Lee believes that value isn’t solely about price; a shirt can hold value due to personal significance, design, or memorable associations.
Memorable Finds and Aspirations
Lee recalls a noteworthy collection discovery at a Goodwill in Washington State, which included pop-punk tees from bands like The Wonder Years and Blink-182. Despite the find, he purchased only select shirts.
Some artists, such as Panic! At The Disco and “Weird Al” Yankovic, hold particular significance for Lee, motivating his hunt for their merchandise.
His advice to fellow thrift shoppers is to research an artist’s history and merchandise, yet he estimates leaving 75 percent of the merch he finds behind. To him, it means giving old merch another life. One item he’s still searching for is a Pretty. Odd. Panic! At The Disco hoodie for his girlfriend, without the high cost.
