Tom Selleck Almost Missed His Iconic Role On ‘Magnum, P.I.’

Tom Selleck nearly declined one of his most famous roles. On Ted Danson’s podcast, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” Selleck shared how a conversation with actor James Garner influenced his decision to take the lead in “Magnum, P.I.”

Selleck explained, “I was concerned because the studio assigned me this show, saying I had to do it despite completing my contract. I hated the original version of ‘Magnum, P.I.'” Garner advised, “If they want you, now is the time to leverage your power.” Selleck rejected the studio’s proposal, acknowledging Garner’s key role in reshaping his career.

Selleck related the original character of Thomas Magnum to being “very James Bond-like.” He preferred a flawed character akin to Garner’s Jim Rockford from “The Rockford Files.” “I didn’t want to be Rockford, but I wanted a character with vulnerabilities,” he noted.

After success with the miniseries “The Sacketts,” Selleck had more influence on “Magnum, P.I.” He met with writers and requested a character with depth. Co-creator Donald P. Bellisario responded with a compelling script, transforming the series.

Selleck recounted to Charlie Rose in 1997 how he risked his career by demanding a character overhaul. “If it hadn’t worked out, I might’ve been labeled difficult,” he admitted. Ultimately, he sought a complex character.

The title “Magnum, P.I.” also faced a legal challenge due to its similarity to “Magnum Force.” Selleck disliked the added “P.I.” due to its possible cultural insensitivity in Hawaii, referring only to the show as “Magnum.”

Despite having six unsold pilots, Selleck took a risk with “Magnum, P.I.” reflecting a principle he learned from his father that opportunity often requires risk. He remarked, “It was a chance worth taking.”
