A tragic incident occurred in Hopkins, Minnesota, where a man took the lives of his wife and 7-year-old daughter before ending his own life. This happened at a daycare operated by the family, as young children were present.
Prior to the daycare tragedy, police suspect the man also killed a 78-year-old relative at her Burnsville home, which is about 20 miles away from Hopkins. Authorities determined this connection following a call reporting a stabbing at the relative’s residence.
In the daycare located in Hopkins, the man fatally shot himself after stabbing his wife and daughter. Hopkins Police Chief Brent Johnson shared that another parent called the police upon witnessing the attack during a child drop-off in the home’s basement. Fortunately, the six other children present at Brown Bear Childcare were unharmed physically.
“There’s no worse scenario than this, where you drop off your child somewhere you think is safe, and you get that phone call,” Johnson stated at a news conference.
The daycare tragedy invoked horror not just among the families involved but also in the community. Amanda Marx, a nurse residing nearby, recalled seeing police officers attempting to break down the door of the house. Later, crime scene tape was placed, and young children were carried out by police officers.
Marx mentioned she referred to the residence as the “garage house” due to a mural depicting a tree-lined lake and a moose on the garage door.
The daycare, licensed since 2019, has the capacity for ten children and underwent inspections in recent years with no issues reported. Chief Johnson highlighted that such violent incidents are rare in Hopkins, but the impact of this event is profound.
