On Tuesday, a recreational boat sank in the San Francisco Bay, claiming at least one life. A wave struck the vessel, causing it to roll and eventually sink, as reported by officials. There were 20 people aboard the boat, named Volare. Sixteen were rescued, while three remain missing. Clifford Joseph Boisa, a 79-year-old from Sutter County, California, was rescued alongside the others but died from his injuries.
Authorities disclosed that the group consisted of close friends and family who had gathered to spread the ashes of a loved one in the bay. New official details shed light on the disaster’s moments before the boat sank. Captain Jarod Toczko of the U.S. Coast Guard revealed at a Wednesday news conference that the boat lost stability due to the wave impact; it then rolled onto its right side, causing several passengers to fall overboard. Others likely became confused when the boat listed.
After tilting, the vessel began flooding. Rescue workers reached the scene around 3:30 p.m. The boat’s two lower decks were underwater by then.
