Details of the Accident
A 23-year-old Ohio teacher, Cameron Lyon, died in a car crash. The incident involved two vehicles and occurred in Fairfield County on September 6. The Ohio State Highway Patrol and the local school district confirmed the details of the crash.
The crash happened around 6:15 p.m. on U.S. Route 33 near U.S. Route 22 in Hocking Township. A GMC Terrain, driven by Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, went off the road, overcorrected, crossed into westbound lanes, and overturned. It then hit the Chevrolet Trax driven by Lyon. The GMC caught fire after the crash.
The Victim: Cameron Lyon
Cameron Lyon was a teacher for fifth and sixth grades at Crestline Exempted Village Schools. The school expressed deep sorrow over his loss, sharing a heartfelt statement with the community.
“It is with profound sadness that we share that one of our 5th/6th grade teachers, Mr. Cameron Lyon, tragically passed away following a car accident,” a Facebook post by the school noted.
Lyon had recently graduated from Otterbein University, got engaged in the summer, and was beginning his teaching career. His family expressed devastation at the tragedy and miss him dearly.
He was taken to Fairfield Medical Center, where he died shortly after. His passenger, Abrielle Kerns, sustained injuries and remains hospitalized. A relative, Emily Van Voorhis Kerns, reported on Facebook about her condition and described Lyon as “a great person.” Fundraisers are being planned to support Lyon’s loved ones.
Details on Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez
Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, the driver of the GMC Terrain, faces charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and operating without a valid license. He also faces a DUI charge. Authorities reported his previous deportation from the United States.
The Department of Homeland Security disclosed Uribe-Gonzalez initially entered the U.S. through Texas in January 2020. An immigration judge ordered his removal, and he was deported in April 2020. He reentered the country at an unknown time and place. Following his recent arrest, ICE placed a detainer with the Fairfield County Jail to ensure notification prior to any release.
Markwayne Mullin, DHS Secretary, stated, “Cameron had his whole life ahead of him, and that life was stolen by this criminal who never should have been in our country in the first place.”
A Fairfield County judge set Uribe-Gonzalez’s bond at $5 million initially. Prosecutors later moved to hold him without bond, citing public safety, seriousness of the charges, and his lack of local ties. The case remains under investigation.
