Tragic Incident at Berlin’s LGBTQ+ Parade

On July 25, 2026, a tragic event took place during Berlin’s renowned LGBTQ+ parade when a vehicle drove into a crowd, resulting in one fatality and injuring at least 16 individuals. The police decided to cancel the event hours after it commenced in the German capital due to the severity of the injuries, with some victims facing life-threatening conditions. Emergency personnel, including firefighters and ambulances, were promptly at the scene attending to the victims.

The incident occurred near Kemperplatz, following the cancellation of Christopher Street Day. The Berlin police issued a statement on X urging participants to vacate the premises immediately. According to their report, the car had driven into Tiergarten park, near the pride march’s route, hitting multiple people. The police were uncertain about the exact number of officers present but mentioned that a significant police presence was on-site. An intensive search for possible suspects was underway. A police officer shared in a brief video on the Berlin police X account, “We are conducting an intensive search for possible suspects.”

Police spokesperson Alexander Klute informed The Associated Press that the authorities had no information regarding the motives, identity of the perpetrator(s), or any specifics related to the incident.

The event drew hundreds of thousands of attendees to Berlin for the Pride parade, known in Germany as Christopher Street Day, one of Europe’s largest LGBTQ+ celebrations. Participants were marching towards Brandenburger Tor under the 2026 motto “Haltung ist Hot – Segen statt Hetze” (‘Having principles is hot – Blessing instead of hate’). Unfortunately, the celebration in front of the iconic Brandenburg Gate was abruptly halted around 10:15 p.m. The ongoing performance by a band on stage was interrupted, and attendees were instructed to leave the area and steer clear of the route through Tiergarten park.

Prior to the incident, the festivities were peaceful as people marched through the city, danced to vibrant music, and cheered for the roughly 80 floats participating in the parade. Julian Miethig, who attended the LGBTQ+ event at Brandenburg Gate earlier, expressed his shock when he learned the news. Initially heading to an afterparty, he heard from a friend about the tragic incident unfolding, marked by a visible presence of fire trucks and ambulances. “It’s a dark day for the community,” he reflected after witnessing the scene at Tiergarten.
