2 hours ago 0

Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson expressed profound sorrow following the tragic stabbing of a 7-year-old girl on Chicago’s South Side. The victim, Edi Mari Hernandez Chacon, was identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner. The incident occurred on Saturday when Chacon was walking with her family down South Cottage Grove Avenue.

According to the Chicago Police Department (CPD), at approximately 11:55 a.m., an adult woman approached the young girl, brandishing a sharp object, and stabbed her multiple times in the back. Chacon was immediately transported to Comer Children’s Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

Bystanders who witnessed the attack managed to detain the suspect until law enforcement arrived. The suspect, who sustained injuries deemed non-life-threatening, was later taken to a hospital and remains in police custody. The Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed that Chacon’s death resulted from multiple stab wounds, classified as a homicide.

The community has been deeply affected by this shocking and unprovoked attack. City leaders have joined locals in expressing grief. Mayor Johnson posted on social media, emphasizing the tragedy and calling for increased support for Chacon’s family. He described the event as a nightmare no family should face and said no child should experience such fear in their own neighborhood.

Security footage reviewed by ABC7 Chicago showed Chacon walking hand-in-hand with a family member shortly before the assault. Additional video captured bystanders rushing to intervene, although the suspect was not visible in the footage. Local residents and witnesses shared their shock and sadness in interviews.

“The poor baby had nothing to do with what was going on,” one woman remarked. Another resident questioned how a young child could fall victim to such violence, struggling to grasp the reality of the incident.

One mother told ABC7 that the tragedy felt personal, as her daughter is the same age as the victim. She conveyed her pain as a parent, empathizing deeply with the loss.

Following the tragedy, family members gathered outside Comer Children’s Hospital to mourn Chacon’s passing.

Authorities have yet to identify the suspect, announce charges, or determine a motive. The investigation continues under CPD’s Area Two detectives, with city officials urging support for the grieving family.
