Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes’ Bond Drives Chiefs’ 2026 Season

Rumors about retirement have trailed Kansas City Chiefs’ standout Travis Kelce for several years. Now 36, Kelce has firmly established himself as one of the top tight ends in NFL history. Yet, in March, he committed to at least one more season by signing a one-year, $12 million contract to rejoin Kansas City for the 2026 season.

A key factor in Kelce’s decision to continue playing was his relationship with Patrick Mahomes. Their connection has been evident throughout the training camp. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Kelce spoke about Mahomes’ impressive performance during camp. Mahomes is in recovery from a torn ACL and LCL. Kelce expressed his admiration, saying, “Everybody knows I love that guy. That’s a brother to me. I’m so proud of the way he handled adversity from last year to right now. We still have about a month until the first game, but if you see him out here, he’s enjoying the game, competing at a high level, and not thinking about the knee. He’s playing his tail off and leading us.”

Mahomes suffered his torn ACL and LCL in a Week 14 game against the Los Angeles Chargers last season. The injury prematurely ended his season. The Chiefs ended up losing their final three games, resulting in their worst record (6-11) during Mahomes’ time as quarterback.

As Mahomes approaches 31 and recovers from the most severe injury of his career, questions about his readiness for Week 1 emerged. However, reports from camp have been positive. Coaches and teammates have praised his performance, noting no apparent loss of skill or agility. Indicators are that Mahomes will be ready to start when the Chiefs begin their season against the Denver Broncos on Monday, September 14, at Arrowhead Stadium.
