Senator Bill Cassidy, known for his 2021 vote to convict Donald Trump on impeachment charges, lost the Republican primary in Louisiana. This election saw two challengers with Trump alignments advance to a runoff.
Representative Julia Letlow, with Trump’s endorsement, will compete against State Treasurer John Fleming in a June 27 primary runoff, according to projections by NBC News. Cassidy’s defeat underscores Trump’s growing influence in the GOP as he seeks to sideline Republicans who defied him.
Primary Results and Runoff
Letlow led the primary with 45% of the votes compared to Fleming’s 28% and Cassidy’s 25%, with 93% of the vote counted. As Letlow did not secure a majority, the race proceeds to a runoff.
Trump celebrated Cassidy’s loss via a Truth Social post, referencing the impeachment vote and criticizing Cassidy’s alleged disloyalty.
Cassidy’s Response
Cassidy did not mention Trump directly in his speech but talked about the importance of democracy and accepting election outcomes. He emphasized: “When you participate in democracy, sometimes it doesn’t turn out the way you want it to.” He added that leadership is about loyalty to the Constitution.
Impact of Impeachment Vote
No Republican senator had lost a primary since 2012. Cassidy faced challenges due to his dissent from Trump, despite following many of Trump’s policies post-impeachment. He sought to reassure voters of his commitment to Louisiana’s future.
Yet some voters, like Elias Jacob FaKouri, were displeased with Cassidy’s impeachment vote. FaKouri said, “He tried to impeach Trump, and Trump helped him get elected. That’s pretty low.”
Allies and Critics
Cassidy’s tenure witnessed his role during Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s confirmation as Health Secretary. Cassidy confirmed Kennedy and sought balance in his health policy criticism to avoid provoking Trump.
Despite criticism, supporters valued Cassidy’s independence. One voter, Donny Gutierrez, expressed admiration for Cassidy’s less partisan approach.
Letlow’s Campaign Strategy
Letlow highlighted her Trump endorsement, supported by GOP Governor Jeff Landry. She criticized Cassidy and Fleming as “never Trumpers,” and praised Trump’s impact on her campaign.
Letlow also addressed criticisms over stock trades managed by a third party and shifted views on diversity efforts.
Fleming’s Position
Fleming positioned himself as a true conservative, despite lacking Trump’s endorsement. He referenced his tenure from 2009 to 2017 and roles within the Freedom Caucus and state finance, while self-funding his campaign.
Fleming mentioned facing suggestions to exit the race in favor of Letlow but remained committed.
Looking Forward
The Democratic primary will also end in a runoff, with farmer Jamie Davis expected to advance. The GOP maintains strong election prospects in Louisiana.
