Tropical Storm Arthur Forms, Bringing Flood Threat to Gulf Coast

2 weeks ago 0

MIAMI (AP) — Tropical Storm Arthur has formed from a cluster of storms plaguing the Gulf Coast, becoming the first tropical cyclone of the Atlantic season. The storm poses a threat of flash flooding on the Gulf Coast, especially in Texas and surrounding regions.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami has reported the storm’s maximum sustained winds at around 40 mph (65 kph). There is minimal expectation of strengthening, and the storm is predicted to dissipate by Wednesday night or early Thursday.

In Houston, where a World Cup match was scheduled between Portugal and the Democratic Republic of Congo, no changes to the event were announced despite the weather. The stadium features a covered environment ensuring the game proceeds unaffected.

“The main threat from Arthur is going to be a prolonged, multiday, heavy rainfall event that could produce dangerous to life-threatening flash flooding,” said National Hurricane Center director Michael Brennan during a briefing.

Meanwhile, authorities reported a tragic incident involving a teenager who drowned in a flooded retention pond outside Houston. The 15-year-old boy was found using sonar technology after an extensive search. This incident highlights the dangers of floodwaters, especially following significant rainfall.

Flash flooding is anticipated to continue through Friday, affecting areas in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, and the Florida Panhandle. The storm is expected to drop between 5 to 10 inches (13 to 25 centimeters) of rain, with some locations possibly seeing up to 20 inches (50 centimeters).

Rising waters from storm surge and tide are expected to inundate typically dry coastal areas. Additionally, swells from Arthur may cause dangerous surf and rip current conditions along the northwestern Gulf Coast over the next few days. Tornadoes also pose a risk through Thursday.

As of Wednesday morning, Tropical Storm Arthur’s center was about 40 miles (65 kilometers) east-northeast of Port O’Connor, Texas. The advisory details that Arthur is moving northeast at a speed of 9 mph (15 kph), with an anticipated increase in forward speed.
