Trump Compares Shohei Ohtani to Babe Ruth at White House Event

3 weeks ago 0

President Donald Trump praised Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers during a White House visit. Trump compared Ohtani to Babe Ruth, recognizing him as one of baseball’s greatest players. The Dodgers visited the White House on their road trip to the East Coast.

Trump highlighted Ohtani’s achievements in the 2025 season. Ohtani became the only player with more than one unanimous league MVP in Major League Baseball history, a remarkable feat. Trump’s admiration was evident as he called Ohtani’s performance ‘amazing.’

Ohtani’s career reached significant milestones during the 2024 and 2025 seasons. He hit 99 home runs in those years, leading the National League with an OPS of 1.025. Despite elbow surgery in 2024, Ohtani returned to pitch in 2025 with a 2.87 ERA and a strikeout rate of 11.9 per nine innings.

Ohtani, often called the ‘Japanese Babe Ruth,’ has achieved over 300 plate appearances and 40 pitching innings in six different seasons. This is more than any player in MLB history, including Ruth, who did it twice.

Trump also critiqued the Boston Red Sox’s decision to trade Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees. He described it as the worst trade in sports history. Ruth was sold in 1920 for $100,000 and a loan for Fenway Park renovations.

Currently, Ohtani continues to impress in the season with a .283 batting average, 22 home runs, and 60 RBIs in 94 games. His pitching record stands at 8-2 with a 1.79 ERA over 14 starts, although he missed a start due to a knee issue.

As Ohtani aims for a strong second half, he hopes to lead the Dodgers to a third consecutive World Series title.
