The Memphis City Council’s decision to defer action regarding proposed data center restrictions led to disorder on Tuesday. The Commercial Appeal reported that the council’s vote to delay the decision on a moratorium or further restrictions resulted in discontent among those present. Audience members expressed their disapproval by booing and standing from their seats.
After the vote, some council members exited the chamber abruptly, effectively ending the meeting. This was confirmed by reports from local outlets. Additionally, a physical altercation erupted in the City Hall lobby, although the specific reason for the conflict remains unknown. Online footage of the incident shows individuals involved in the altercation, with one person heard shouting ‘sellout.’
Annie Goldman of The Commercial Appeal shared insights on the social media platform X, describing the chaotic scene: ‘This is the scene after they voted to push the data center moratorium down the line. Council members being ushered out, heavy police presence, and advocates are not happy.’
Discussions about the data center restrictions sparked after Elon Musk’s company, SpaceXAI, established two significant data centers within Memphis neighborhoods Boxtown and Whitehaven. In response, the activist group Indivisible Memphis posted on Instagram, stating, ‘Memphis belongs to Memphis — not Elon Musk.’
This situation is evolving, and further developments are expected.
