During a rally in Wasilla, Alaska, President Donald Trump announced pardons for two diesel mechanics, Zachary Czubak and Patrick Fleming. The two men, co-owners of a diesel repair shop in Anchorage, were convicted in 2022 for conspiracy to violate the Clean Air Act.
Trump brought the men onstage to sign the clemency documents, using the moment to emphasize significant energy investments and infrastructure plans in Alaska. Trump had previously pardoned Mackenzie “Mac” Spurlock, another diesel shop owner from Wasilla.
“I’m giving each one of the three an unconditional pardon,” Trump announced to his supporters.
The president defended the mechanics, arguing their prosecutions during Biden’s administration were unjust and underscored their efforts to keep trucks running in Alaska’s harsh climate. According to the Biden Justice Department, the duo, along with a third co-owner, removed federally mandated emissions-control equipment from at least 37 diesel vehicles from July 2019 to September 2020, earning around $100,000.
As Trump signed the clemency papers, he criticized former President Joe Biden’s use of an autopen, proclaiming his preference to personally sign documents. “So I’m going to sign this now, something that Joe Biden would be unable to do because he was unable to sign his signature,” said Trump.
The rally also included Trump’s announcement of a critical advancement for Alaska’s energy sector: an 800-mile natural gas pipeline had obtained all necessary federal permits. “Every single permit you need, you can start tonight,” Trump declared, affirming the pipeline’s full approval.
One of the pardoned men expressed gratitude to Trump onstage, recounting the hardships brought by the prosecution, which affected friendships and families deeply.
Jasmine Baehr, from Fox News Digital, reported on the event, which also featured Trump’s commentary on the presidential power of granting pardons, deeming it an honor and privilege.
