For the first time during a World Cup final, a lineup of well-known performers took to the field for a halftime show in the match between Argentina and Spain. Madonna opened the show with her 2000 hit “Music” and was accompanied by Brazilian soccer legends Ronaldinho and Ronaldo. BTS followed with “Dynamite,” while Justin Bieber, introduced by Jason Sudeikis, performed “Everything Hallelujah” with an acoustic twist.

Shakira, experienced in World Cup performances, joined Burna Boy for “Dai Dai,” the tournament’s official song. The performance concluded with a children’s choir from Staten Island’s P.S. 22 singing “We Believe,” accompanied by Chris Martin and the Muppets, including Kermit the Frog and Miss Piggy.

FIFA aimed to create a cultural moment similar to the Super Bowl halftime show, but critics expressed concerns about disrupting the game. The spectacle lasted nearly 12 minutes, excluding the time needed for setting up and removing staging at MetLife Stadium, making the total intermission about 27 minutes.

Chris Martin, Coldplay’s lead singer, selected the performers and led the creative direction. The event, produced by Global Citizen, aimed to raise awareness for a philanthropic fund focusing on children’s education access. The show made immediate trends on social media, including performers like Justin Bieber and the Muppets.

PS22’s participation was notable, with students performing at major events such as the Oscars. Minimal staging and props were used, and creative camera angles facilitated smooth transitions between acts. The field displayed the word “Love,” while Shakira and Burna Boy’s “Dai Dai” echoed throughout the stadium, reinforcing its status as the official anthem.

Performers wore outfits blending stage flair and jersey-inspired designs. BTS performed with numerous backup dancers, and the crowd reacted positively. Gustavo Dudamel showcased a pinstriped suit and personalized jersey, leading accompaniments with the Muppets. The show’s staging and costumes combined soccer influences with performer signatures.

Madonna’s entry from a stadium tunnel and field performance highlighted the halftime show. Other significant appearances include Burna Boy, a star from Africa who previously performed at events like the NBA All-Star Game.

Gustavo Dudamel directed a tribute to the victims of a 7.5-magnitude earthquake in Venezuela. He coincided members of the New York Philharmonic and the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra. As the departing artistic director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Dudamel prepares to lead the New York Philharmonic soon. His farewell in Los Angeles included a series of concerts and events, marking his 17-year tenure.
