President Donald Trump recently indicated plans to impose tariffs on Canada as a response to the smoke resulting from wildfires. The move is unclear in terms of legal authority, as the president may not possess the power to implement such tariffs without a clear legal basis.
Despite requests for clarification, the White House has not provided information on the legal mechanisms that would permit these tariffs or the method for determining the levy rates. In a post on Truth Social, Trump described the financial impact of the pollution as ‘incalculable.’
Earlier this month, Trump met with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at a NATO summit in Turkey. The tariff threat followed this meeting but lacked specific details on execution and legality.
