Kristi Noem’s Role and Hunting Season Draw Attention

55 minutes ago 0

Kristi Noem, the former Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary, marked South Dakota’s pheasant hunting season with a photo on X. Dressed in hunting gear and holding a gun, she stood beside a dog, sparking widespread online comments. This comes shortly after her role as special envoy to the “Shield of the Americas” concluded.

Who Is Kristi Noem?

Noem served as South Dakota’s governor from 2019 to 2025 before taking the DHS Secretary role under President Trump. Known for her allegiance to Trump and her passion for hunting, Noem was once considered a potential vice-presidential pick for 2024. Her prospects dimmed following backlash from a memoir excerpt where she described shooting her 14-month-old dog, Cricket, citing the dog’s behavioral issues.

Earlier this year, she returned to the headlines when allegations surfaced about her husband, Bryon Noem, living a secret life. In September, Noem filed for divorce.

End of Special Envoy Role

On Friday, it was reported that Noem’s tenure as special envoy to the “Shield of the Americas” had ended. This initiative aimed to combat drug trafficking and illegal migration in the Western Hemisphere. As special envoy, Noem worked with regional leaders on security matters. Her appointment lasted six months, and she now serves as a senior adviser to Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau.

Her change in role was confirmed by the Department of State, and she remains actively involved in related security efforts.

Reaction to Social Media Post

“Happy Opener, South Dakota! Foster and I wish you good luck in the field! Pheasant hunting is part of who we are, and it’s a tradition worth passing on to our kids and grandkids,” Noem wrote.

The post has been viewed over 2.2 million times. Many comments expressed concern over the dog’s future alongside the gun in the photo. Users pleaded for the dog’s safety, reflecting ongoing distress over the past controversy involving Cricket.

Pheasant Hunting Traditions

Pheasant hunting in South Dakota stretches from October 17 to January 31. Dogs play a critical role by locating birds and signaling their presence to hunters. This tradition emphasizes the importance of passing hunting customs to future generations, a value Noem has publicly supported.

Dog Controversy Background

Noem’s book “No Going Back” discussed shooting her dog, Cricket, after it attacked chickens and turned aggressive. She defends her actions, citing concern over her children’s safety. Noem explained her decision was rooted in prioritizing her children over what she saw as a dangerous animal.

Reactions to her memoir and public statements have continued to influence perceptions of her leadership and personal decisions.
