President Donald Trump introduced a refurbished presidential aircraft on Friday at Joint Base Andrews. The aircraft, a Boeing 747-8i, stands out with its size and luxury, featuring a new red, white, and blue paint scheme. This aircraft, donated by Qatar and modified for presidential use, serves as a temporary Air Force One. It fills the gap while Boeing continues work on the delayed VC-25B replacements.
Trump, alongside Air Force leaders and service members, highlighted the noticeable increase in size compared to previous aircraft. “The biggest difference is the difference in size. It’s like virtually double the size,” Trump remarked.
We meticulously evaluated every requirement to accelerate delivery while maintaining the high standards expected of the presidential mission.– Air Force Secretary Troy Meink
The refurbished aircraft is set to begin commissioning flights as part of its final testing phase before it becomes operational. Air Force Secretary Troy Meink emphasized the importance of the president’s safety and security during these evaluations.
Trump chose this aircraft due to frustrations with Boeing’s delayed program. He requested the plane after noting the aging U.S. fleet compared to modern aircraft operated by other nations. “I asked the Emir if we could use the brand new 747,” Trump said, adding that the plane had limited flight hours.
The new color scheme aligns with Trump’s preferences, replacing the light blue-and-white design from the Kennedy era. The Air Force has confirmed that this design will become standard across the presidential fleet, including the forthcoming VC-25B aircraft.
Furthermore, Trump praised the interior’s craftsmanship, calling it “the world’s most luxurious plane.” He also hinted at the aircraft playing a key role in the upcoming America 250 celebration, potentially leading a July 4th flyover featuring U.S. military aircraft.
The Pentagon accepted the aircraft last year, and preparations for presidential service have been underway. The timeline for this aircraft was quicker than the VC-25B program due to fewer interior modifications required.
The jet is expected to bridge the time gap until Boeing delivers the new Air Force One aircraft, anticipated in about two years. Trump expressed gratitude to over 250 personnel involved in its preparation, seeing the project as a modernization of the presidential fleet.
