Trump Urges Republicans to Act on Filibuster and Supreme Court Expansion

1 hour ago 0

President Donald Trump has addressed recent Democratic plans to remove the Senate filibuster and potentially expand the Supreme Court. In a Truth Social post, he urged Republicans to act before Democrats do, warning that failure to move quickly would jeopardize their chances of winning future elections.

Trump’s comments come months ahead of the midterm elections, where Democrats aim to regain control of Congress after Republicans gained majorities in both houses. The midterms often lead to seats lost by the party in the White House.

Key Points

In his post, Trump claimed Democrats plan to end the filibuster and expand the Supreme Court if they gain power. He referenced a June 24 resolution by key Democratic caucus leaders, which supports reforms like ending the filibuster and adding more justices to the court.

Trump reiterated his stance against the filibuster, which requires a 60-vote majority for cloture, arguing that it should end. Supporters of the filibuster believe it fosters bipartisan compromise, but opponents view it as a tool for obstructing majority-backed legislation.

According to a May Marquette Law School Poll, Americans are divided on expanding the court, with an even split in opinion on adding more justices. The court has held nine justices since 1869, though its size has changed before.

Democratic calls for changes to the court increased after Trump’s term, where his administration secured a 6-3 conservative majority by confirming three justices. The resolution supporting these reforms also calls for restoring the Voting Rights Act and was introduced by Representative Greg Casar, among others.

Democratic Resolution

The resolution seeks to restore voting rights, eradicate the Senate filibuster, and consider Supreme Court structural changes. Introduced June 24, it is supported by several major Democratic caucus leaders but remains unlikely to progress in the current Republican-run Congress. The resolution highlighted the court’s ruling in Louisiana v. Callais, which weakened Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act, historically used to protect minority voter rights.

The resolution signals support for ending the Senate’s 60-vote threshold and enacting Supreme Court reforms, including a judicial ethics code, term limits, and potentially expanding the court. It currently sits with the House Judiciary Committee.

Upcoming Midterm Elections

With four months until the midterms, Democrats lead Republicans in polls for regaining control of the House. Democrats have displayed strong performances in recent elections, aided by Trump’s declining approval. The Republican majority stands at 218-212, and Democrats need few seat flips to secure control.

If Democrats take back both congressional chambers in November, advancing proposals to drop the filibuster or change the court will face considerable political barriers and require broad internal support.

Primary elections are ongoing, with more planned until September. The general election is set for November 3.
