Trump Uses Economic Pressure Against Iran

1 month ago 0

The Trump administration is focusing on economic measures to pressure Iran instead of military strikes, according to U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. He stated that economic pressure currently affects Iran the most, but military action remains an option if required. Hegseth warned that military force could be used if Iran provokes the U.S. military.

These comments came on the same day that Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent introduced a new economic pressure strategy against Tehran. This initiative, named “Operation Economic Outcast,” threatens to disconnect countries with financial ties to Iran from the U.S. dollar system. Bessent emphasized that any country maintaining financial ties with Iran risks isolation from the global financial network.

Bessent further explained that U.S. officials are reaching out to their counterparts worldwide to encourage them to sever ties with Iran. The message is clear: cooperation with Iran could have severe consequences. The Treasury Secretary indicated that swift consequences would follow if these warnings are ignored.

In response, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf criticized the U.S., claiming that their economic threats are ineffective. However, Hegseth pointed out that increased economic pressure might push Iran to negotiate about their nuclear program, meeting President Trump’s demands.

Meanwhile, the United States canceled a joint military exercise with South Korea due to resource limitations linked to the situation in the Middle East. Additionally, members of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee expressed concerns about the impact of extended military deployments on service members’ mental health, pointing to reports of deteriorating conditions on U.S. military vessels.

Further tensions are visible in Ukraine, where Russian troop movements are escalating. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky expressed concerns about potential increases in Russian troop numbers, which could heighten hostilities.

In Latin America, the U.S. military conducted a strike on a drug-trafficking vessel, resulting in the deaths of two individuals associated with drug operations. The U.S. Southern Command confirmed this action as part of ongoing efforts to combat narcotics activities in the region.

These developments highlight the complexities and challenges in current U.S. military and foreign policies. Monitoring continues on how economic measures and military readiness are being balanced.
