Trump’s Approval Among White Voters Sees Notable Shift in Latest Poll

President Donald Trump’s approval rating among white voters improved markedly in the latest Marquette Law School poll, showing a reversal from previous deficits. The survey conducted between July 22 and 27 with 639 white respondents revealed that 51% approved of Trump’s job performance, while 49% disapproved. This results in a net approval rating of +2, a significant change from June’s -12 rating among 903 white respondents, where only 44% expressed approval.

Recent polls had depicted a downward trend in Trump’s standing due to concerns over issues like the economy, inflation, and tensions with Iran. White voters form a substantial portion of the U.S. electorate and have been pivotal to Trump’s political success. Any decline in support from this group could pose challenges for Republicans in the upcoming midterm elections.

The president’s party historically loses seats in midterm elections, and shifts in white voter support could influence control of Congress. If a significant number choose Democrats or abstain, Republican efforts to maintain control of the House and Senate may be jeopardized.

The latest CNN poll showed a -20 net approval rating for Trump among white voters, marking the lowest level of his presidency. Conducted from July 23 to July 27 among a national sample of 1,225 adults, it revealed a steady decline in Trump’s approval among white voters. His standing fluctuated from even in July 2025 to various negative ratings, eventually hitting -20 in July.

Signs of diminishing support were also evident among Republicans. The poll indicated 78% approval, the lowest recorded during Trump’s tenure, with only 19% showing enthusiasm for his remaining time in office. Economist/YouGov polls have illustrated similar trends, notably among white voters without a college degree, a key segment of Trump’s base. Their net approval dropped from +14 last February to -14 in the latest survey, held between July 25 and 27.

Polling expert Costas Panagopoulos urged caution regarding the Marquette Law School poll results. He highlighted potential deviations due to polling methodology, sample differences, and question framing. Despite the fluctuations, he noted that polling discrepancies are common.

The White House has consistently dismissed low approval ratings, focusing instead on Trump’s prior electoral victory as evidence of public endorsement. White House spokesman Davis Ingle emphasized Trump’s mandate from voters to pursue his agenda, citing achievements in job creation, inflation reduction, and housing affordability.

White voters have been integral to Trump’s coalition since his 2016 win and generally provide stronger ratings than the national average. The direction of Trump’s overall approval ahead of the midterms will likely depend on whether support among this key demographic improves or declines.
