Trump’s Approval Falls Within GOP

Donald Trump’s net approval rating among Republican voters has declined by 8 percentage points in the last month, according to a Financial Times/Focaldata poll. This drop reflects growing dissatisfaction with the economy and increasing living costs.

More than 53 percent of registered voters reported feeling financially worse off since Trump resumed office in January 2025. This group includes nearly 57 percent of independents and about a quarter of Republicans.

With upcoming midterm elections, Republicans aim to maintain their congressional majorities, while the Trump administration continues to highlight its economic record.

Survey Details: August Findings

The poll, conducted from August 7-10 among 1,913 registered voters, indicated 55 percent disapprove of Trump’s presidency. It shows a significant 8-point decrease in Trump’s net approval among Republicans from the previous month.

Additionally, over half of voters stated their financial situation has deteriorated since Trump’s return to office. The poll also revealed a trend wherein voters increasingly trust Democrats over Republicans regarding issues like inflation, employment, and the economy.

The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.

Economic Concerns Linger for Voters

Economic issues are a crucial concern as the November elections approach. Republicans are encountering polling that highlights dissatisfaction with inflation and household costs.

This survey is part of a broader trend of economic unease among GOP voters. A July poll from Pew Research Center, reported by Newsweek, found 28 percent of Republicans view Trump’s economic policies negatively, up from 18 percent in January. Despite this, 69 percent still approve of Trump’s job performance.

Other polls further underscore voters’ frustration. A YouGov/Economist survey from July 31 to August 3 showed only 30 percent approved of Trump’s economic management, with 65 percent disapproving. Just 25 percent approved of his handling of inflation, while 69 percent disapproved.

Republican Criticism on Economic Messaging

Speaking on CBS News’ Face the Nation, Republican Representative Don Bacon of Nebraska criticized Trump’s communication regarding economic issues.

Bacon said, “He doesn’t communicate it well,” referring to Trump’s understanding of American financial challenges. He advised acknowledging economic issues and working towards improving wages over inflation rates.

Bacon also criticized tariff policies, attributing them to higher consumer prices.

“Tariffs have hurt inflation,” Bacon noted, highlighting their role as a consumer tax.

White House Stance

White House spokesman Kush Desai countered the poll’s assessment. He defended the administration’s economic policies, citing efforts to lower drug prices, reshoring jobs, and cutting taxes.

Desai emphasized achievements like reduced violent crime rates and enhanced border security, attributing economic challenges to the previous administration.

Midterm Election Outlook

With midterms approaching, the Financial Times/Focaldata poll shows Democrats leading Republicans 44 percent to 39 percent.

Recent data underscores economic concerns. Inflation was at 3.4 percent in July, along with a drop in consumer sentiment and real wages.

The GOP faces a challenge in balancing Trump’s economic record with voter concerns on affordability as elections near.
