Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian recently arrived in New Delhi, India, for the BRICS summit. Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump embarked on a visit to Ireland aimed partly at attending a major golf tournament. In Dublin, he held discussions with Irish President Catherine Connolly and Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
Connolly, known for her previous criticisms of Trump, greeted him at Áras an Uachtaráin. After shaking hands, Trump inspected an Irish Army honor guard while a band played the U.S. national anthem. The visit also included meeting business leaders and scheduled private talks with Martin to discuss trade and foreign policy matters.
Trump’s visit stirred protests from opposition parties and groups in Dublin. Residents expressed frustration over disruptions, while university student Mina Petrovski voiced concerns over Trump’s policies. Despite protests, Eric Trump claimed that the family is well-regarded in Ireland, highlighting the employment provided by their golf resort in Doonbeg.
The trip followed the 25th anniversary of the September 11th events, with Trump previously spending two nights delivering speeches at a rally in Dallas. His attendance at the Irish Open reflects his penchant for attending and organizing large sporting events, integrating personal leisure with official responsibilities.
Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin emphasized the importance of maintaining solid trans-Atlantic relations, looking forward to discussions with Trump on mutual interests. Martin expressed hopes of an Irish victory in the golf tournament, with Shane Lowry leading at the halfway mark.
Donald Trump’s frequent golfing continues with his visit to Ireland, underscoring his blending of presidential duties with personal ventures. His golf courses have hosted European Tour events, further intertwining his business interests with global sporting events.
