Two Chicago police officers were shot on Friday evening in the South Shore neighborhood. The incident occurred around 5 p.m. near East 79th Street and South Chappel Avenue. The Chicago Fire Department spokesperson Larry Merritt stated that the officers were transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center. A civilian was also hospitalized, though their conditions were not immediately available.
Details surrounding the shooting were initially unclear. However, a police source involved in the investigation suggested an exchange of gunfire followed a traffic stop. One officer was reportedly hit in the vest, while the other suffered an injury to the arm.
The Civilian Office of Police Accountability confirmed an investigation into the officer-involved shooting at the site near 2000 East 79th Street is underway.
