Two-Vehicle Crash Involving Waymo Car Injures Several in Los Angeles

A collision involving a Waymo vehicle near downtown Los Angeles injured several people on Sunday, with two individuals requiring hospital care. The incident occurred at the intersection of Venice Boulevard and Toberman Street in the Pico-Union neighborhood at 5:45 a.m.

First responders reported that two people were transported to local hospitals, while at least one other person received treatment at the scene. The Los Angeles Police Department has not confirmed the exact number of injured parties, as the investigation into the crash is ongoing.

Initially categorized as an auto-pedestrian incident, the crash’s cause remains undetermined. Photos from the scene showed scattered debris and clothing. A spokesperson from Waymo, Ethan Teicher, stated that their vehicle was likely not the cause of the accident.

“The safety of our riders and other road users is our top priority,” Teicher said. “We are coordinating with first responders and are grateful for their quick response.”

Waymo reported that their self-driving car was traveling east at 27 mph when a blue sedan traveling between 47-50 mph struck a pedestrian outside of a crosswalk. The sedan then veered into oncoming traffic and collided with the Waymo vehicle.

Local authorities and company representatives are working together to determine the precise circumstances surrounding the crash.
