Tyler Shough’s Journey to Starting Quarterback for the New Orleans Saints

1 hour ago 0

The New Orleans Saints have chosen Tyler Shough, their second-round draft pick from 2025, as their starting quarterback for the 2026 season. Shough began the 2025 season as a backup, but now he has the entire offseason and training camp to prepare for his role. He has expressed excitement about having the opportunity to further develop and learn head coach Kellen Moore’s strategies.

Mentorship and Development

During Super Bowl week in February, Shough spoke about the invaluable mentorship he received in New Orleans. He mentioned the support provided by the Saints’ legendary quarterback Drew Brees, who recently entered the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Brees praised Shough for his leadership traits and his initiative in organizing offseason workouts. Brees also admired how Shough gathered his teammates to prepare them for camp.

Shough, aged 25, came into the NFL after spending years in college football with three different schools: Texas Tech, Oregon, and Louisville. Although this journey might seem like a challenge, Brees viewed Shough’s experience as an asset. Shough overcame injuries and other adversities during his college career, which helped him mature and develop.

“Tyler Shough is mature beyond his years. Spending time across different programs aided his growth,” Brees said.

Transition to Starting Role

In the 2025 season, Spencer Rattler was initially the Saints’ starting quarterback. However, by Week 9, head coach Moore assigned the starting role to Shough. Shough ended the season with a 5-4 record from those starts and led the team on a four-game winning streak. Brees believes that observing from the sidelines helped Shough adapt and improve his skills.

Shough is noted for his athletic abilities. His size, strength, and throwing capabilities make him a dynamic player, similar to Josh Allen. These attributes enhance the team’s run game options.

Building Around Shough

The Saints have been active in strengthening their offense around Shough. They secured Chris Olave with a long-term contract and drafted Jordyn Tyson. The team also signed Travis Etienne Jr., complementing established stars like Alvin Kamara and Juwan Johnson. This strategy aims to bolster their offensive line with recent high draft picks.

Brees believes the setup is ideal for Shough’s continued growth and success due to Moore’s expertise in play-calling and developing quarterbacks.

Drew Brees Beyond Football

Apart from football, Brees is making strides as a businessman. He co-owns Walk-On’s Sports Bistreaux, one of the fastest-expanding sports bar franchises originating from Louisiana. The franchise focuses on offering quality food and a family-friendly atmosphere. Leveraging partnerships like the one with DIRECTV FOR BUSINESS allows the sports bar to broadcast games from across the country.

According to Brees, sports bars play a significant role in bringing people together. Sports enthusiasts find camaraderie in these establishments, forging new friendships and creating a vibrant community atmosphere.

“Fans have more friends. You step into your local sports bar, and soon enough, you’re making connections and sharing your love for the game,” Brees stated.
