U.S.-China Relations in a Fragile State

As President Donald Trump continues to highlight a positive relationship with China, the reality might be less optimistic. An expert warns of a “very dangerous period” in U.S.-China relations. Concerns are growing that Chinese President Xi Jinping might be gearing up for a conflict with the United States.

Upcoming Summit Between Trump and Xi

Trump and Xi are scheduled to meet on Thursday in Washington, D.C. This meeting happens only four months after their previous encounter in May. The discussion will likely focus on artificial intelligence and trade. Despite positive rhetoric from both leaders, Gordon Chang, a senior fellow at the Gatestone Institute, argues that Xi is preparing China for possible military action against the U.S.

Xi Jinping keeps on talking about going to war against us, and also he’s preparing China’s society, civilian and military, for battle.

These comments come after reports that China assisted Iran in attacks resulting in the deaths of three U.S. troops in Jordan earlier this summer.

China’s Alleged Role in Middle Eastern Conflicts

The Wall Street Journal reported that Iran received satellite images of a Jordanian airbase from Chinese sources before attacking. Chang accuses China of providing targeting data leading to the loss of U.S. servicemembers. He stresses the need for Trump to adopt a tougher stance against China, criticizing decades of dialogue that have worsened U.S. positions.

Ongoing Risks: Espionage and Warfare

China’s actions aren’t limited to military arenas. Chang warns of “unrestricted warfare” through various means like fentanyl trafficking, espionage, and sabotage.

Whatever one thinks of the strategic discussions the United States has with China, there’s this moral dimension that China is deliberately killing Americans.

This week’s summit may differ significantly from the May meeting due to increased Middle Eastern conflicts and a rapid AI race.

Prospects for AI Discussions

Chang anticipates Trump won’t fare better on AI negotiations than former President Joe Biden in 2023. Xi Jinping’s position is inflexible due to domestic challenges within the Communist Party and perceptions of U.S. decline.

He’s not very much inclined in any event to compromise with the United States.

The outcome of the summit remains uncertain as both leaders navigate geopolitical complexities.
