Recently, videos and images circulated on social media, displaying numerous U.S. sailors visiting Pattaya, Thailand, after a lengthy deployment at sea. The USS Abraham Lincoln’s crew had been deployed for 286 days, prompting concern over food shortages and mental health issues. These worries were dismissed by President Donald Trump. The carrier group, which was part of operations in the Iran war, reached Thailand’s Chon Buri province for some rest.
Besides the USS Abraham Lincoln, the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr. docked at Sriracha in Chon Buri, while the USS Robert Smalls arrived in Rayong province. U.S. Navy officials met with Pattaya city leaders to plan arrangements, including behavior guidelines for the sailors.
Pattaya, once known for its adult entertainment, is now branding itself as a family-friendly spot. It offers various activities, such as water skiing and golfing. However, initial concerns involved sailors using local services prohibited by military justice. According to MS NOW, the USS Lincoln’s commanding officer reminded crew members of potential disciplinary actions for prohibited conduct.
Local businesses in Pattaya displayed banners and billboards welcoming the U.S. personnel. The sailors began exploring the city on Wednesday night, particularly Walking Street. Many traveled from the Laem Chabang area where the Lincoln docked. More personnel arrived in buses, and some used chartered vehicles to move around.
Social media platforms buzzed with images and videos of the sailors. Instagram posts showed them visiting neighborhoods, while a TikTok video of a sailor dancing drew over 2,000 likes. Comments ranged from joking about their appearances to expressing empathy for their lengthy tour at sea. Another video highlighted the lively atmosphere created by the sailors’ presence.
Reports indicated a positive economic impact from the sailors’ visit, with about 5,000 personnel in the area. However, an incident occurred outside a bar on Walking Street, involving two Americans. This was managed by local police and deemed minor. They were returned to their ship for the remaining days of the stop.
The association between U.S. military personnel and Pattaya dates back to the Vietnam War, when thousands of American service members were stationed in Thailand. Pattaya was near key military sites like the Sattahip naval base and U-Tapao airfield.
