Golf star Charley Hull recently found herself at the center of a social media debate after pulling a prank on her caddie, Adam Woodward. Speaking at the Women’s British Open at Royal Lytham & St Annes Golf Club in England, Hull recounted how she gave Woodward a fake scratch-off lottery ticket, leading him to believe he had won $100,000. The prank did not sit well with everyone, prompting criticism on social media.
However, Hull, 30, remained unfazed by the backlash. Addressing reporters, she had a straightforward response to those upset by the joke: “No, and people that have complaints about it, I’d say loosen up.” Her message implied that she saw the prank as lighthearted fun.
Hull shared that Woodward, her caddie, reacted positively after realizing it was a prank, describing him as taking it “like a champion.” She recounted his initial excitement when he thought he had struck rich, energetically moving around the player’s lounge. Hull assured that she felt momentarily bad for him but maintained it was a harmless joke. “If people don’t like it they can lump it, do you know what I mean?” she remarked, emphasizing her intent for a lighthearted prank.
On Monday, Hull purchased the fake lottery ticket in town and handed it to Woodward the following day. She described Woodward’s initial ecstatic reaction, recounting how he started celebrating and announcing his supposed win. “He’s scratching it, scratching it, scratching, and he’s like ‘Oh my gosh, I’ve won,'” Hull said, adding that he was overjoyed, claiming he would take the day off.
In hindsight, Hull noted the situation ended well as both she and Woodward were able to focus positively on the tournament. They are currently in a promising position, with Hull tied for seventh place at 2-under par, four strokes from the lead.
Hull’s prank has sparked varied reactions, illustrating the subjective nature of humor. Still, she remains committed to enjoying the moment, with plans to buy Woodward more scratch cards as a friendly gesture.
