2 weeks ago 0

The U.S. men’s national soccer team took a decisive win against Paraguay in their opening World Cup match, winning 4-1 at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California. The team demonstrated dominance from the start, with their initial lead established through an own goal by Paraguayan midfielder Damián Bobadilla in the 7th minute.

Star forward Folarin Balogun widened the gap to 2-0 by slipping the ball past Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill in the 31st minute. Balogun further showcased his skills with a spectacular strike into the top left corner during the first half stoppage time. Despite Paraguay’s midfielder Mauricio scoring in the 73rd minute, the effort could not close the gap, as U.S. winger Gio Reyna cemented the win with a phenomenal strike in the second half stoppage time.

The victory positions the U.S. team with three points at the top of Group D, joined by Australia and Turkey, who are set to compete next. The U.S. will face Australia in their upcoming match on June 19 in Seattle.

Previously, the U.S. struggled to score, with only three goals combined during their four matches at the Qatar World Cup. This win displays a fortified U.S. team, thriving under new coach Mauricio Pochettino and his innovative play strategies during a match attended by 70,492 enthusiastic fans in Los Angeles.

Folarin Balogun, hailing from New York and raised in London, marked his World Cup debut with a remarkable multigoal feat, last seen in 1930. Choosing to play for the U.S. instead of the English team, Balogun has promptly demonstrated the striking prowess the U.S. team historically lacked.

Christian Pulisic, who contributed to the initial goal, was substituted by Sebastian Berhalter at halftime. Although the U.S. team did not specify any injury, Pulisic signaled to his family that he was fine. His runs down the left side helped create the first two U.S. goals.

Throughout the first half, Balogun’s runs proved instrumental, scoring moments after an offside call nullified an earlier goal. As the first half concluded, Malik Tillman delivered a well-placed pass to Balogun, who expertly maneuvered to deliver a brilliant shot.

In Pulisic’s absence during the second half, the U.S. appeared less coordinated, yet Gio Reyna concluded the match with a crucial goal. Reyna’s achievement was significant after experiencing limited playtime at the Qatar World Cup due to conflicts involving former U.S. coach Gregg Berhalter.

The game drew a crowd of American celebrities and cultural figures, including Tom Cruise, George Lucas, Bill Gates, Halle Berry, Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, gathering near Hollywood to cheer for the team.
