The United Kingdom plans to deploy RAF Typhoon jets to Saudi Arabia to bolster defenses against missile and drone attacks launched by the Iranian-backed Houthis.
On Tuesday, U.K. Defense Secretary Wes Streeting announced that these aircraft will serve in a defensive capacity. Their mission is not to conduct offensive operations against the Houthis. In addition to the jets, the U.K. will send military advisers and a RAF A400M transport aircraft. This transport plane will aid in moving defense equipment within Saudi Arabia.
This announcement follows the Houthis’ claim of responsibility for two attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport on October 10 and 11. These strikes resulted in 13 deaths and injured 308 individuals. The Houthis are engaged in a civil war against Yemen’s internationally recognized government, which receives support from Riyadh.
This remains a developing story. Further updates are expected.
