Ukraine’s Drone Strikes in Crimea Challenge Russia’s Stronghold

7 days ago 0

Since mid-May, waves of drone strikes have caused fuel shortages and power outages on Russia-annexed Crimea, aiming to be a “psychological breaking point” for Moscow. The Ukrainian drone forces’ commander stated that these actions are part of a campaign to isolate Crimea. Strikes on highways have precipitated a fuel crisis, halting civilian fuel sales.

Ukraine targets the transport, energy, and tourism sectors to exhaust resources, as explained by Robert Brovdi, head of Ukraine’s Unmanned Systems Forces. Through a Telegram post, he directly addressed Russian President Vladimir Putin, asserting future changes. Brovdi released footage showing an oil depot in Kerch, Crimea, on fire.

Crimea, annexed illegally by Russia in 2014, symbolizes a significant victory for Putin. It serves as a military logistics hub due to its proximity to Ukraine, but Ukrainian drone technology developments make it vulnerable.

The fuel crisis escalated when Ukraine intensified strikes on the key “Novorossiya” highway. Sales to civilians stopped, relegated only to essential services. Sergey Aksyonov, Crimea’s head installed by Russia, reported casualties from recent strikes in Kerch.

Clouds of smoke over Kerch followed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s claim of targeting an oil depot and logistics facilities. Power outages, attributed to “technological disruptions,” plagued the region. Restrictions on street lighting and outdoor events have been imposed by the Sevastopol governor.

Crimea, once a tourism hotspot, faces industry derailment due to the crisis. Summer camps stopped admitting children. On the Ukrainian side, Brovdi apologized for the logistical challenges his country faces, urging caution around military sites and flammable areas.

Michael Clarke from King’s College London believes that despite Ukraine’s acknowledgment of not liberating Crimea soon, it remains a strategic pressure point. The crisis has created issues for the Kremlin, adding to internal dissatisfaction with Putin.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated efforts to minimize the crisis’s impact are in progress. Meanwhile, influential Russian bloggers criticized the Kremlin’s lack of response to Ukraine’s isolating actions. They warned about Crimea’s isolation turning into an “island.”

Despite a static battlefield and stalled U.S.-led peace efforts amid a war with Iran, potential isolation of Crimea could serve as a significant bargaining tool for Kyiv. Clarke suggests that pressure on Putin might rise if Russian symbols suffer continuous distress.
