Understanding the Democratic Party: A Conversation with Ben Wikler

3 weeks ago 0

The Democratic Party, often at the center of political discourse, raises questions about its current state and future potential. What is its structure? How does it operate? Who are the people behind it?

Ben Wikler, former state chair of the Democratic Party in Wisconsin, provides insights into these questions. He emphasizes the need for the party to reinvent itself to remain relevant and effective in today’s political climate.

Wikler transformed the Wisconsin Democratic Party from 2019 to 2025. He established it as a forceful entity in terms of fundraising and community organization. Under his leadership, the party saw mixed results in the 2024 election. Kamala Harris narrowly lost Wisconsin, while Tammy Baldwin secured a Senate victory.

Despite his contributions, Wikler’s bid for chair of the Democratic National Committee (DNC) was unsuccessful. Ken Martin won, yet many Democrats now wish Wikler had prevailed, given subsequent challenges in fundraising, organization, and internal cohesion.

Wikler has returned to the public eye as the author of ‘This Is The Plan: How to End America’s Meltdown and Save Democracy.’ His focus remains on revitalizing the Democratic Party. He proposes strategies for its rejuvenation, aiming to address its current flaws and fortify its role in American politics.
