Urgent Ukrainian Request to SpaceX Over Starshield Restrictions

1 hour ago 0

Ukraine is urgently requesting Elon Musk’s SpaceX to reverse new restrictions on its Starshield satellite service. A source familiar with the situation has indicated that these restrictions might affect Ukraine’s ability to intercept Russian attack drones and conduct military operations.

Restrictions Imposed Without Warning

The restrictions were introduced without prior notice, despite Ukraine’s reliance on the service under arrangements contracted through the U.S. government until May 15, 2027. Ukrainian forces experienced connectivity issues overnight and contacted SpaceX customer support. They were informed that Starshield service would be restricted on platforms traveling at speeds of 100 miles per hour or higher.

Impact on the Battlefield

Starlink connectivity at speeds of up to 160 km/h is being restored. Removing Starshield’s speed limit entirely is now critical for Ukraine’s defense.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov acknowledged restored connectivity below the threshold but emphasized the need for the complete removal of the speed restriction.

Serhii Beskrestnov, adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, warned that the change could hinder intercepting Russia’s newer Shahed attack drones.

Ukraine’s 7th Rapid Response Corps reported connectivity problems even while drones traveled below the 100 mph limit, forcing mission cancellations in the Huliaipole front.

Political Reactions

Senator Thom Tillis questioned SpaceX’s intent publicly, stressing that degrading Ukraine’s defense capabilities could be seen as aiding an aggressor.

Polish Foreign Minister Radislaw Sikorski criticized Musk on social media, recalling previous disagreements over Ukraine’s reliance on Starlink.

Official Responses and Communication

Ukraine has contacted SpaceX seeking clarity on the restrictions and requested restoration of prior service capabilities. They communicated that these new restrictions were causing significant issues in ongoing operations against Russia.

As of Wednesday morning, SpaceX had not responded to Ukraine’s request. Poland currently finances over 2,900 Starlink terminals operating in Ukraine.

Defense Contracts and Operations

The Pentagon, contracting through Space Force, has agreements with SpaceX for Starshield services. This arrangement gives the department a role in managing these agreements, though it does not clarify whether the military or SpaceX controls operational restrictions, including the new speed limit.

Fox News Digital has reached out to the Pentagon, White House, and SpaceX for further information. As of now, there is no public confirmation regarding Musk’s personal involvement in implementing these restrictions.
