The United States has committed $1 billion in security assistance to Colombia following the inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella as the nation’s new president. De la Espriella, a wealthy lawyer known for his dramatic public presence, assumed office on Friday to serve a four-year term, with a campaign driven by concerns over national security.
In a statement, the U.S. announced its intention, in collaboration with Congress, to provide $1 billion as part of a security package to support Colombia’s efforts under President de la Espriella’s leadership. Despite having no prior political experience, de la Espriella secured an endorsement from former President Donald Trump.
At the military recognition ceremony during the presidential inauguration in Cali, Colombia, de la Espriella communicated his ambitious plans. He vowed to defeat narco-terrorism decisively, declaring that dialogue efforts with guerrillas have been exhausted, a stance contrasting with the former administration’s attempts at peace talks.
Under Gustavo Petro, Colombia’s first leftist president, the relationship with the U.S. faltered, with Petro’s government seeking a new approach to drug trafficking issues and attempting, without success, to negotiate with armed groups. The nation’s electorate, distressed by ongoing violence and ineffective peace efforts, turned to de la Espriella, a political outsider with dual U.S. and Colombian citizenship.
De la Espriella’s policies include hosting U.S. troops on Colombian land, bombing cocaine labs in jungle areas, constructing large-scale prisons, and reducing government size. The new leadership marks a renewed alignment with the U.S., strengthening ties in counternarcotics and trade within the Western Hemisphere.
