Michael Byrne, the esteemed British actor renowned for his roles in “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1” and “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,” passed away on June 20 at the age of 82. His representative confirmed the news, expressing the loss of a talent whose warmth and humor impacted many. Byrne’s passing marks the end of a career that spanned seven decades.

The Guardian reported Byrne’s death, but as of yet, the cause remains undisclosed. Known widely for his diverse roles, Byrne most recently appeared in a film in 2023 according to his IMDb page. His talents extended beyond cinema as he also contributed to television and theater.

Byrne portrayed a violent soldier named Smythe in Mel Gibson’s film “Braveheart.” His career began on television with appearances in “No Hiding Place,” “Silent Playground,” and “ITV Saturday Night Theatre.” His film journey started in 1963’s “The Scarlet Blade,” later renamed “The Crimson Blade” in America.

Ahead of his film success, Byrne achieved recognition on stage, performing with Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company in plays such as “Romeo and Juliet,” “The Cherry Orchard,” “Much Ado About Nothing,” “Death and the Maiden at the Royal Court,” “The Double Dealer,” and “The Seagull.”

His role as an older Gellert Grindelwald, a notorious dark wizard in “Harry Potter,” stands out among his extensive list of credits. Variety highlights that Byrne accumulated over 170 credits across theater, film, and television, showcasing his versatility and dedication to his craft.
