Violent Protests Erupt in Northern Ireland After Stabbing Incident

In Newtownabbey, Belfast, on Wednesday, June 10, 2026, police deployed water cannons against rioters who ignited wheelie bins and dismantled a garden fence for protection. This marked the second night of unrest following a brutal stabbing incident on a Belfast street. Rioters, wearing masks, extracted bricks from walls and shattered sidewalks with sledgehammers to hurl at officers. They repurposed parts of a picket fence to shield themselves.

Earlier, a 30-year-old man named Hadi Alodid, originally from Sudan, faced Belfast Magistrates’ Court charged with attempted murder. The attack left Stephen Ogilvie severely injured. Alodid was also accused of possessing a knife and making threats. During the assault, police found him with a knife, while Alodid later expressed regret and showed aggression toward hospital staff. He declined legal counsel through an Arabic interpreter and did not plead.

Authorities anticipated further violence after men set fire to homes suspected of housing immigrants. They burned trash bins, a bus, and targeted police with projectiles. Firefighters rescued individuals from blazing homes, leaving over two dozen homeless. Belfast resident Anselme Shima witnessed the destruction, expressing fear and uncertainty about the future.

Police Service of Northern Ireland Chief Constable Jon Boutcher highlighted that families across various communities suffered. Both Irish nationalist First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly condemned the violence, calling it cowardly and unjust.

The incident and subsequent unrest were exacerbated by a viral video of the attack. Protests were further fueled by far-right activists online. Alodid, who entered Northern Ireland in 2023 seeking asylum, was not linked to terrorism.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Justice Minister Naomi Long criticized the violence and the misuse of social media to incite racism. Discussions emerged about reviewing the open border with the Republic of Ireland, a sensitive subject due to its role in the peace process that ended “The Troubles.”

Separately, unrest related to a stabbing in Southampton further highlighted tensions around immigration. This case involved the murder of Henry Nowak by Vickrum Digwa, resulting in violent protests and several arrests. The incident underscored ongoing challenges in addressing community relations and criminal violence.
