Ramaswamy Campaign’s Advertising Controversy
The campaign of Vivek Ramaswamy, a Republican candidate for Ohio governor, recently found itself in a predicament. The campaign used footage that included Vernon Edwards, a man with a serious criminal conviction, in an advertisement. Newsweek confirmed Edwards’ criminal history through Ohio court records and a sheriff’s registry which indicates he is subject to lifetime sex offender registration.
Campaign spokesperson Evan Machan stated they were unaware of Edwards’s background when the advertisement was produced. Following the revelation, Edwards was removed from the ad. The campaign highlighted that while Edwards’s presence was unintended, the issue of rising property taxes, the ad’s focus, remains critical to Ohio residents.
How Edwards Appeared in the Advertisement
The footage stemmed from a September meeting at the Lorain County Fair. Patty Edwards, the wife of Vernon Edwards, had an interaction with Ramaswamy where she expressed concerns about property taxes potentially forcing her family to relocate. Later, the campaign featured her in the advertisement, discussing those issues candidly.
Her husband Vernon was not central to the ad but appeared in footage from the fair. After initial reports from The Bulwark, the campaign removed both the ad and a related social media video.
Vet Procedures Under Scrutiny
This incident sparked discussions about the campaign’s vetting processes. Although the campaign mentioned having no prior knowledge of Edwards’s background, the information about his conviction is publicly accessible.
Political Reactions
The situation drew criticism from Dr. Amy Acton’s campaign, the Democratic opponent in the gubernatorial race. Acton’s campaign criticized Ramaswamy’s judgment and use of Edwards in campaign material, questioning his political associations and decisions.
Addie Bullock, Acton’s spokesperson, reiterated broader criticism, while the Ramaswamy campaign insisted their focus was on property taxes’ burden and emphasized Edwards’s removal after learning about his past.
Responses from Patty Edwards
Patty Edwards defended her involvement in the ad, emphasizing the campaign’s focus was on her concerns about property taxes. She argued the case against her husband, mentioning he had served his sentence and was now an ‘exemplary citizen’.
Ohio Governor Race Dynamics
As the election approaches, the controversy adds tension between the two candidates. The latest polls show Acton leading with 48.1 percent against Ramaswamy’s 44.1 percent.
Ramaswamy’s team is working to keep property taxes in the spotlight, while Acton’s campaign challenges his judgment amid this controversy.
